Gua means (刮) = to rub, Sha (痧) = area of red raised millet like skin rashes. The Sha radical of the Chinese word means = sickness + sand. Gua Sha is an instrument assisted (closely timed) unidirectional press-stroking of a lubricated area of body surface that intentionally creates transitory therapeutic petechiae representing extravasation of blood in the subcutis. It is often used to treat neck pain, shoulder tension, myalgia, chronic pain and other muscle issues.”
