Living Chi Gua Sha is a modality used by the practitioners to help reduce tension within the body through gentle strokes of an instrument such as jade. “It is a Traditional Chinese Medicine Modality that has been used for thousands of years is Gua Sha. Gua means (刮) = to rub, Sha (痧) = area of red raised millet like skin rashes. The Sha radical of the Chinese word means = sickness + sand. Gua Sha is an instrument assisted (closely timed) unidirectional press-stroking of a lubricated area of body surface that intentionally creates transitory therapeutic petechiae representing extravasation of blood in the subcutis. It is often used to treat neck pain, shoulder tension, myalgia, chronic pain and other muscle issues.”
When performing Gua Sha, an instrument will be used, whether it be a ceramic rounded soup spoon, a jade piece or any other rounded curved item specific for Gua Sha will be used to rub along your body with a type of ointment or oil.
Gentle strokes in a particular direction will be performed to help with feeling relax and at ease and follow the body. The marks of the petechiae will fade and completely resolve over several days depending on the intensity of the treatment.
